shomer mitzvot- settling into my tea habits

Image
5 adar 1 5782 i am starting to settle into my tea habits. i have gained a good sense of what i want to drink and when. ive also started to gain a sense of how i want my tea budget to look. both of these things are a couple of the main goals for me on this blog. i now know that too much sheng is rough on my stomach. this is especially true for younger shengs. i don’t want sheng to be a daily drinker for me (maybe an aged huangpian or something decent and affordable and aged that works well for cow drinking. when i first started my puer journey i was hoping to ride the wave of the shouletariate and to have shou be my go to daily drinker while saving my budget for more fancy teas to be reserved for the better quality aged sheng. this hope was momentarily derailed by an experience with a fancy shou wrecking my stomach. but after drinking a lot of tea, and then drinking some more tea, i am back on the road to settling into that goal and being happy with it. i will write a future post about ...

kach l'cha samim- weed and tea pt. 1

Image
3 kislev 5782 its finally happening. i am writing a post about weed and tea. it’s been a long time coming. ive wanted to write this so long ago but i thought i should have some more ‘respectable’ content on this blog first. it’s the same idea as when you don’t show your true self until the 3rd date date but that is not my style. either you like me now or you don’t. this is what youre gonna get so get used to it. let's get that out of the way quick. there is a lot to talk about regarding this topic and this will probably be the first of multiple posts. the first thing i want to start off with hearkens back to my previous posts . tea is a plant. it has a lot of noticeable affects on our bodies including immediate ones and ones we don’t see right off the bat (ie: naturally occurring vitamins and minerals etc. those phytochemicals affect our blood sugar or glucose levels or other scientific things i don’t understand and produce different reactions or sensations in our bodies). th...

b'reisheet barah- in the beginning

This guide is created in mind for people who are new to drinking puer and want to know where to get started when buying tea. This is also aimed at people who do not want to spend a lot of money or do not have a lot of money to spend. This blog is written by somebody who doesn’t have a lot of money and lives in Amerika. Just want to say that to show what influences my buying habits based on availability and shipping. I first want to say that this can be an expensive hobby. Not only can certain teas be expensive but puer is also a high maintenance tea that requires certain storage and care if you really want to get the best out of it. I will say this now to make sure it is said up front: Please, please, please, buy samples. The best way to learn about puer is by trying it. Tea is something you experience with your body and no matter how much you read about it, the only way to find what you like is to try a whole bunch of things. Yes, it can be expensive to try all this tea, but ...

mei hamarim- the bitter waters

1 nisan 5781 the past couple of weeks my stomach has not been feeling well. it was feeling bloated and i had lots of cramping. there were a couple of days where it was hard for me to eat or drink because my stomach felt so upset. i had no idea what was going on.   i have a lot of health problems and it becomes extra stressful when something is happening in addition to my usual level of discomfort/pain. was it because i had missed a few days of one med that is supposed to prevent the side affects of another med that can cause upset stomachs? was it because i took an NSAID one day for when my body hurt more than normal and the cumulative years of NSAIDs were fucking up my stomach? was it because i had a younger puer and it was too harsh on my body? there’s so many variables it gets hard to figure out what is going on.   after two weeks, my stomach got a little better but not back to my regular level of meh. could it be the puer? i haven’t been drinking anything that young, but i...

mix thoroughly, thoroughly mix- on blends

Image
1 adar 5781   i was very inspired and pleased by MarshalN’s post about blends. it hits on some of the main points on why it is hard to be a serious tea nerd in amerika. besides not having access to a certain portion of physical tea, we have limited access to the scaffolding of tea culture. part of the desire to age puer in the west is for enthusiastic hobbyists, but also because it is hard to affordably access fully aged puer in the west, so we might as well do it ourselves.    in China, aging is done by tea makers and tea sellers. besides aging puer cakes (bricks, maocha, etc), tea shops would have their own signature blends for their customers. a little bit from this cake here, a little bit of maocha there. some young sheng, some old sheng, and some ripe mixed in to balance it out. these blends were unique to each shop and very affordable. this sounds like something i would love especially as someone who loves cooking, experimenting, and creating.   in that same b...

ivduh b'simcha- tasting mystery tea at work

23 kislev 5871 i have a few coworkers who are also into tea. i am a bit more o.d. than they are believe it or not. i talk to them about the teas im drinking and we keke about tea and rom coms and make puns. it’s a good time. i am very excited to pour tea for them when this pandemic is over (i really miss pouring tea for people). one coworker of mine told me about two puers he bought recently. they are both bings. i was intrigued. he said he had got one from teasource.com and he’d be happy to give me a sample. the next day, he brought in a little corner he had broken off to share with me.   hm, it smells like shou, which makes sense because i assume if your are a non-ultra-tea-nerd drinking a dark puer, theyre most likely to have access to shou. i brew some up fake gong fu style using a large tea-ball strainer and a small coffee cup to do flash steeps with the kettle in the back of the warehouse.    it tasted like bad shou. it had that bland fishy taste and was just ...
